Reducing Scope 3 Emissions through Product Innovation at the Estée Lauder Companies (An ACCO Future CCOs Program Case Study Authored by Alina Rodriguez)

As a global company with a global footprint, the Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) sees ESG and its focus on climate change as a business imperative for mitigating potential harms and maximizing the company's potential to grow and thrive for decades to come. To play its part in helping to address the risks associated with climate change, ELC worked with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to create science-based targets (SBTs) for GHG emissions reductions.

In 2022, Alina Rodriguez completed a one-year fellowship at the Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) through ACCO's Future CCOs Post-Graduate Climate Fellowship Program. Alina was assigned to the climate team in the Global Corporate Citizenship and Sustainability function at ELC, where she assisted the company in developing strategies around reducing GHG emissions associated with raw materials and packaging so that ELC could meet its science-based targets by 2030.

The case study provides background on ELC's climate change ambitions and Alina's insights on opportunities for product innovation, supplier data, lower carbon raw materials and packaging, and prospective next steps.

ELC joined the Future CCOs program as an employer in 2021.  Alina was hired into a permanent full-time position at the conclusion of her fellowship in January 2022.  ELC then hired another ACCO fellow in May 2022, who will be publishing a subsequent case study in the next few months.
